The Science Behind Binaural Beats

What is a binaural beat?

A binaural beat is an auditory phenomenon that occurs when two tones with slightly different frequencies are presented to each ear through stereo headphones. Your brain perceives a third "phantom" tone whose frequency is the difference between both tones.

Example

If we send 200 Hz to your left ear and 210 Hz to your right ear, your brain generates a perceivable pulsation at 10 Hz. That pulsation is the binaural beat.

Why does it work?

This phenomenon is called brainwave entrainment. Your brain tends to synchronize its electrical activity with external rhythmic stimuli. By exposing yourself to a binaural beat at a specific frequency, your brain activity gradually shifts toward that frequency, facilitating the associated mental state.

Brainwaves: Delta to Gamma

Your brain produces measurable electrical activity in different frequency ranges depending on your mental state. Each range is associated with specific states:

Delta — Deep Sleep

0.5 – 4 Hz • Visualizer: Purple

The slowest brainwaves, produced during deep dreamless sleep. Your body regenerates: growth hormone (HGH) is released, tissues are repaired, and the immune system is strengthened.

Theta — Meditation & Creativity

4 – 8 Hz • Visualizer: Deep Blue

Theta waves appear during deep meditation, daydreaming, and at the boundary between wakefulness and sleep. This is where creative ideas, deep memories, and vivid experiences emerge.

Alpha — Calm Awareness

8 – 13 Hz • Visualizer: Emerald Green

Beta — Active Focus

13 – 30 Hz • Visualizer: Orange

Beta waves are your normal waking state. They dominate when you're thinking, solving problems, making decisions, or concentrating on a task.

Gamma — Peak Performance

30 – 100 Hz • Visualizer: Luminous White

The fastest brainwaves, associated with peak cognitive performance: "eureka" moments, expanded perception, and integrated neural processing. Rare in daily life and observed in expert meditators.

Background Noise: White, Pink & Brown

Background noise serves two purposes in Aethyr Waves: it masks environmental sounds that could distract you, and it creates a sonic foundation that complements the binaural beats.

White Noise

"Bright, enveloping, uniform"

Contains all audible frequencies at equal intensity. Sounds like constant static or strong wind.

Best for: Masking environmental noise, maintaining focus in loud environments.

Pink Noise

"Warm, natural, balanced"

Similar to white noise but with naturally emphasized bass frequencies, like how the human ear perceives sound in nature. Sounds like steady rain or a distant river.

Best for: Sustained concentration, studying, long work sessions. The most versatile noise — used in 17 of 30 sessions.

Brown Noise

"Deep, warm, enveloping"

Bass frequencies dominate strongly, creating a deep, cocooning sound. Sounds like sustained distant thunder or ocean surf.

Best for: Deep sleep, meditation, relaxation, anxiety and pain relief. When you need to feel wrapped in sound.

Tip: Some sessions (especially gaming, energy, and pre-workout) use no background noise to let you hear your environment — like your game audio — while still receiving the binaural beats.

Procedural Music & Emotion

What is procedural music?

Unlike pre-recorded music, Aethyr Waves generates music in real-time using composition algorithms. This means every session produces a unique melody that never repeats exactly, avoiding the monotony of repetitive loops.

Music is one of the most powerful tools for influencing emotional states. Aethyr Waves leverages the fundamental principles of music psychology:

How music reinforces intention

The combination of scale + tempo + timbre creates a coherent emotional environment that reinforces each binaural session's intention:

Anxiety session: Alpha beats (calm) + brown noise (cocooning) + calm melody (pure consonance) = multiple layers working toward the same relaxing intention.

Gaming session: Beta beats (focus) + no noise (hear game audio) + no melody (zero distraction) = pure focus without interference.

Meditation session: Theta beats (introspection) + brown noise (isolation) + ethereal melody (transcendence) = invitation to release mental control.

Chapter 5

The Wizard (Quick Start)

The Wizard is the simplest way to use Aethyr Waves. It guides you in 4 steps to find the perfect session for your current need.

Step 2: Energy Level (Premium)

A 5-point slider that adapts the session to how you feel right now. From "Exhausted" to "Hyperactive", each combination of goal + energy maps to a specific optimized session.

Step 3: Duration (Premium)

Choose your session length: 10, 20, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.

Step 4: Recommendation & Play

The wizard displays the matched session with its name, description, brainwave band, beat frequency, duration, and a "PROGRESSIVE" badge if the session changes frequency during playback. Press Play to begin.

Free tier: Only Meditate, Focus, and Gaming goals are available. Energy and duration steps are skipped (neutral energy, 5-minute sessions).

Chapter 6

Advanced Mode

Advanced Mode gives you full control over every parameter. Access it by pressing "Skip" in the wizard or after completing a session.

Session Presets

30 sessions organized in 7 categories with navigation tabs: All, Mental, Sport, Emotional, Pain/Health, Sleep, Productivity, and Wellness. Each button shows the session name and a "PRO" badge if premium is required.

Brainwaves

Shows the active brainwave band and current binaural beat frequency, with an educational description of the selected band.

Background Noise

Three buttons to select noise type: White, Pink, or Brown. The preset selects the recommended noise, but you can change it anytime.

Procedural Melody

12 musical moods to choose from. You can change the mood during playback to explore different emotional environments.

Timer

Duration buttons (10, 20, 30, 45, 60 min) with a live MM:SS countdown. When the timer reaches 00:00, the session stops automatically with a smooth fade-out.

Chapter 7

The Volume Mixer

The mixer lets you independently adjust each audio layer to create your perfect combination. There is no universally "correct" setting — experiment and find what works best for you.

♫ Binaural

Default: 30%

Controls the volume of the pure binaural tones — the two sinusoidal frequencies that generate the beat. A level of 20–40% is usually enough. Too high and the pure tones can become annoying. Too low and the entrainment effect weakens.

♬ Noise

Default: varies by session (0–10%)

Controls background noise volume. Adjust it to mask environmental sounds without drowning out other layers. In a quiet room, 5–15% is usually enough. In noisy environments, increase to 20–40%.

♩ Melody

Default: varies by session (0–40%)

Controls the real-time procedural music. This is the most emotionally expressive layer. For sleep, lower it to 15–25%. For active meditation or creativity, raise it to 50–60%.

♪ Master

Default: 75%

Controls overall output volume. Affects all layers equally. Binaural beats work even at low volumes — you don't need it loud. Moderate volumes are more sustainable for long sessions and better for your hearing.

Philosophy

Everyone responds differently to audio mixes. The same person may prefer different combinations depending on the moment, mood, and environment. The preset values are a starting point, not a rule. Trust your ears.

Chapter 8

Progressive Sessions

Some sessions don't maintain a fixed frequency. Instead, they use frequency progressions that gradually change throughout the session, guiding your brain through different states. These sessions are marked with a "PROGRESSIVE" badge.

Gamer Mode (60 min)

0–20% → Alpha 10 Hz — Warm-up, relax and prepare the brain

20–35% → Beta 14 Hz — Initiate focus

35–50% → Beta 18 Hz — Intensify concentration

50–70% → Beta 20 Hz — Peak focus & reaction time

70–85% → Beta 18 Hz — Sustained performance

85–93% → Beta 16 Hz — Gradual ease

93–100% → Alpha 12 Hz — Cool-down

Insomnia (45 min)

0–70% → Theta 4 Hz — Calm the active mind

70–100% → Delta 2 Hz → 1.5 Hz — Gradual transition to deep sleep
